Areas of Expertise

Families with Young Children

When your child is struggling, academically, socially, or emotionally, the impact often ripples down into your home life.  Your child may appear sad, distracted, nervous, withdrawn, and even angry.  The stress and frustration experienced by your child made lead to some poor coping strategies.  This, in turn, may cause tension amongst some family members.  My creative, “out of the box” style of problem solving motivates children and adolescents to become invested in learning new strategies to manage their emotions.  I also teach parents effective techniques to help support their child at home & in the community, how to diffuse an emotionally charged situation, and how to restore balance to the entire family system.  Individual, parenting, and family therapy sessions are available to meet your family’s specific needs.

Special Families

Changes in Life Cycles for Individuals  Couples

Over the last 20 years, I have had both personal and professional experience working with children diagnosed with intellectual and social learning disabilities, especially Autism Spectrum Disorder.  I understand the unique challenges that special families face as we navigate our way from diagnosis to intervention and beyond.  Being part of a special family can be overwhelming at times.  It can cause a strain on intimate relationships or create difficulty for siblings struggling to understand.  It may become the only defining variable of your family.  It does not have to! I will teach you strategies to prevent these types of pitfalls from happening.

One of the most important steps along the journey special families take is learning to put a diagnosis in perspective.  I will help you realize all the possibilities available to you and your family.  I will help you realize all the possibilities available to you and your family. I will help you identify activities that promote successful bonding and fun while strengthening your family unit.  I will provide you with social networking opportunities with other special families to reduce your sense of isolation and widen your circle of support.  Maintaining hope, happiness, a sense of humor, and balance for the needs of all family members are crucial for a well-adjusted special family.  Parenting and family therapy sessions available.  Individual therapy sessions are also available to children, adolescents, and adults with a developmental, intellectual, and/or social learning disability.

Transitions can be difficult for most of us  Life change such as a geographic move, the start of a new school or job, the birth of a child, the launching of children, the empty nest syndrome, and the start or end of a relationship, can all be stressful events even when considered "happy" occasions.  When face with an unfamiliar challenge, most of us default to the coping strategies we have always used, including those which are ineffective.  Sometimes new situations require new strategies  I can help you asses your current life cycle change and identify the additional tools needed to successfully pivot your way though the transition process.
